Lamborghini: cars, crashes and celebrities

Stick two fingers up at your local car dealer and chances are they’ll loosen the brake lines – or rewire the indicator switch to the windscreen washer.

Not so for a thrusting young Italian tractor-maker who – having found a problem on his Ferrari – took it back to Enzo Ferrari for a quick once over. Enzo told him where to stick it.

So a furious Ferrucio started his own supercar company – and today, despite being owned by the Volkswagen Group, Lamborghini stands for the rebel in us all.

Which goes some way to explain why celebrities and rock stars – and anyone with a pulse – love ‘em.

Dramatic styling, engines powered by thunder and an air of punk fill the Lamborghini with character no other supercar-maker can match.

The crashes

Sadly however, this power sometimes gets the better of some owners.

Take this lot for example. Last week we reported on an astonishing FIVE Lamborghini Murcielagos being trashed in three months.

And if that shocks, think of the power and the metal – a total of 3,200bhp and £1 million worth of Lambo. Totalled.

A 22-year-old driver trashed one in Moscow (below), two yellow Murcielagos (could they be in any other colour?) were crashed in Ukraine and Russia, and a black Lambo is currently at its final resting place in a Polish scrapyard.

A fifth smash involved a Murcielago rear-ending a Hyundai Santa Fe in Seattle.

The celebrities

Thankfully, trashing such a rare supercar is, well, rare.

And these celeb owners take great care to ensure their Lambos are as preened and plucked as their media personae.

Take Jay Kay – he likes his Lamborghinis. He once appeared on an episode of Top Gear driving Richard Hammond around in his ludicrously rare Lamborghini Miura – a car which is the equivalent of…well, you know what.

And when a car dealer friend of his got wind of the UK’s only Lamborghini Reventon, he executed utmost haste to bring Jay the prized motor.

Bear this in mind – there are only 20 Reventons in the world.

He’s not the only one who likes his Lamborghinis. England’s very own Captain Fantastic and pant-wearing billboard extraordinaire David Beckham is a fan.

When he used to play football in Blighty, Becks ordered a brand new Lamborghini Murcielago VT, complete with ‘Hercules’ alloy wheels and a special exhaust system.

But his move from Manchester to Madrid meant he didn’t pick up the Lambo – which eventually found its way into our classifieds sporting a £129,000 price tag.

Somebody who did buy a Lambo though, is Top Gear’s motoring megamouth Jeremy Clarkson.

He became so enamoured with the Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, he bought one to replace his Ford GT. That GT, despite sitting on his drive, kept sending him text messages it was being half-inched.

We’re pretty sure however, that if the Lamborghini sent Jeremy a text, it would contain swearing. And it would be lewd.
