Casey Johnson's unexpected death has sent many news seekers to the late heiress' Twitter account, which has the bizarre distinction of picking up more than 4,000 followers since news broke of her death on Monday.
A cached version of Casey's Twitter page shows that she had 5,007 followers last week. As of this writing, she has 9,373 followers. Granted some of those could have slipped in before Casey died, but I'm guessing the majority of that growth is posthumous.
The act of following a dead person on Twitter seems strange since that person will obviously not be Tweeting anymore. Unlike say facebook, users are unable to express any condolensces directly on the person's account. Do all those people who have signed up to follow her think that maybe she'll Tweet from the grave? Or maybe she's not really dead? Maybe it's just their way of bookmarking her account for future reference, or maybe the more followers a Twitter user gains after death, the more fondly they are remembered.
Still, Twitter is unavoidably a part of celebrity deaths these days. In this case, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and several other celebs have commented on Casey's death via Twitter. Not to be outdone, Casey's girlfriend at the time of her death, Tila Tequila, has posted seven Tweets since Casey's death.
